Malta International Airport connected to 109 destinations in 2025
- Southern Europe remains the most well-connected region, but notable improvements in Northern and Eastern Europe connectivity
- Traffic in the winter months accounted for 39.5% of H1 total
- Liquid containers up to 2 litres now permitted in hand luggage
Route Network
Malta International Airport’s reach has continued to grow in 2025, as five new airlines, including LOT Polish, Qatar Airways and SAS Scandinavian Airlines, joined the airport’s network since January to bring the total number of direct connections up to 109 destinations.
Between January and June 2025, Malta International Airport’s route network continued to favour Southern Europe, which remained the leading regional destination, capturing 35% of all scheduled and charter flights. While still dominant, this share slightly decreased from 37% in 2024, signalling a subtle but notable diversification of traffic.
Over the same period, connections with Northern and Eastern Europe also experienced a modest uptick over 2024, with Northern Europe now making up 24% of total flights (up from 23%), and Eastern Europe growing from 10% to 12%. These results were driven by the launch of new routes to Helsinki (operated by Norwegian) and Copenhagen (operated by SAS), alongside ongoing efforts by LOT Polish Airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air to strengthen links with the Polish market.
Year-Round Tourism Strategy
Securing year-round connectivity has remained a key priority within Malta International Airport’s route development strategy. The company’s sustained collaboration with local tourism stakeholders has been instrumental in achieving this goal, as reflected by the winter months (January, February and March) accounting for 39.5% of the total 4,541,113 movements registered between January and June.
As the airport looks towards strengthening connectivity with Northern Europe further, the upcoming winter season will see SAS extend its Copenhagen service into the off-peak months for the first time and Ryanair launch a new service to Gothenburg in Sweden.
July Traffic Results
In July, 1,035,341 passengers travelled through Malta International Airport. Aircraft movements for the month of July were up by 5.3% year-on-year, totalling 6,375 movements, while seat load factor for the month remained unchanged at 89.6%.
Italy regained the top spot on Malta International Airport’s market leaderboard, accounting for 21.6% of total movements. The United Kingdom followed closely behind with a share of 21.1%, ahead of Germany (7.4%), France (7.3%) and Poland (7.0%).
Passenger Experience
Passengers departing from Malta International Airport are now permitted to carry liquids in containers of up to two litres, as well as electronic devices, in their hand luggage without the need for removal at the central security checkpoint. This development follows the European Commission’s recent re-authorisation for the full use of EDS C3 security scanners. Given that the 100ml liquid restriction has not been uniformly lifted across all EU airports, passengers are advised to check security regulations at their destination airport for their return journey.
Malta International Airport’s ongoing terminal expansion project also represents a strategic investment in the enhancement of the passenger journey. The first phase of the project was successfully completed with the commissioning of the new non-Schengen arrivals area in June. This expanded facility now accommodates twice the number of immigration booths, in preparation for the Immigration department’s phased implementation of the new EU Entry/Exit System, which is set to commence in October. The company has now progressed to the second phase of the project, focused on the terminal’s extension towards the east.
